Deep Space nine - Season Four - III

17) For the Cause Rating * Odo and Eddington have reason to believe Kasidy Yates is a Maquis spy. Boring episode with too much Sisko, too much Kasidy, and too much of the pointless Marquis. Again, who cares about the Marquis? If they got what they wanted, it wouldn’t change anything on DS9.

18) Shattered Mirror Rating *Jake is kidnapped to the mirror universe and Sisko must cross over and work with Jennifer to retrieve his son. Astoundingly draggy “Mirror” episode. Characters can now go to the “Mirror Universe” anytime they wish. Hence, any tension (and there’s little) revolves around Sisko helping “the alliance” so Jake can be released.

And there’s little fun with the “Evil” characters. . Evil Kira is good for a few laughs, but that’s about 5 minutes. She arrives 18 minutes in, and leaves 20 minutes later. ( And its rather misogynistic the way her character is a slut with the hots for Sisko). As for the others: Smiley Obrien, Worf, and Garak aren’t much difference from their normal selves. Evil Dak and Evil Bashir have little onscreen time. So, the whole episode is just Sisko defeating the Klingons so he and Jake can go back. Garak spends the whole time in a spaceship with Worf (now Regent) with a chain around his neck. These two talk a lot, but say nothing funny or interesting. Padding?

19) The Muse Rating * An alien helps Jake realize his writing potential, Meanwhile, Odo helps Lwaxana Tro. Jake is awful, and Odo-Lwax are only good in small doses.

20) Sons of Mogh Rating * Kuron comes to DS9 and asks Worf to perform the Klingons' honorable suicide ritual. Disappointing Klingon Drama. Mediocre guest star, dull subplot. What’s really absurd is the self-righteous attitude toward Kuron’s wish for Klingon ritual suicide. This entails Worf killing Kuron, allowing Kuron to go to Klingon Heaven. Problems:
  • First, we just had an episode “The Quicken” which argues FOR assisted suicide!
  • Secondly, what right do Dax and Odo have to interfere in a Klingon family matter?
  • Third, we get Sisko thundering that while he respects other cultures, that doesn’t extend to “Murder”. How can it be “murder” – its religious Klingon assisted suicide. Later, since Sisko won’t allow Kuron to die at Worf’s hands, Worf gets Bashir to “Wipe his memory”- and we’re supposed to applaud this “humane” solution. Hey, you can still live, but what made Kuron “Kuron” is dead. And no Klingon Heaven for you. Crazy!

21) Our Man Bashir Rating * A transporter accident sends the senior staff into Bashir's fantasy holosuite program - a dangerous 20th century game of spies. Bad James Bond fantasy - the cast lacks the required charm and charisma. .

22) Rules of Engagement Rating * Worf's confrontation with the Klingons results in a deadly accident, and the Klingon government wants him extradited for punishment. But is Worf just a pawn in a political game? Starts out well but turns into a predictable courtroom drama. Acting wise, Sisko, Worf, and the Prosecutor are non-value-added. Worf can a funny and a believable action figure, but he’s NOT Laurence Olivier to say the least.

23) Bar Association Rating ZERO Rom and the bar workers form a union and go on strike, leaving Quark with no help—and the Ferengi Commerce Agency threatening him. Extremely dreary Ferengi story with lots of Rom. Good point? No Wallace Shawn.

Deep Space Nine - Seeason Four Reviews - II

10) Paradise Lost Rating ** Part II Sisko tries to prevent a rogue Admiral from declaring martial law on Earth to subdue the Shape-shifter menace. Basically “Seven Days in May” meets DS9. Damn, I’ve seen this plot in about 50 TV shows. Do liberals producers ever get tired of this Trope? Further, Avery Brooks doesn’t have the acting chops make the overly familiar story interesting. .

11) Homefront Rating **Sisko and Odo return to Earth to prevent another shape-shifter Dominion terrorist attack. Painful episode with way too much Nog, Sisko, and the dull Sisko family. The Guest stars are a mixed lot. Earth’s President has terrible makeup and few acting skills. The Admiral is suitably charismatic but has little chemistry with Sisko - his supposed “Old friend”. Odo keeps this from having a lower rating. The worst thing was “Daddy Sisko” refusing to take a shape shifter Blood test because “Goll dern it, I aint no alien, just look at me, I’m a Chef, Dabnabit”

12) Rejoined Rating **Dax is reunited with a spouse lost several hosts before, and considers breaking a fundamental Trill taboo. Terry Farrell and the Guest Star are quite lovely to look at, but it’s an episode that spins its wheels and goes nowhere. The producers symbolic “Gay Rights” episode.

13) Hard Time Rating **After an alien government punishes O'Brien with memories of 20 years of incarceration, he must return to reality and begin the struggle of rebuilding his life. Well acted, character study. But ultimately just O’Brien torture porn with pointless suffering and emoting. Nice to see Keiko but she needs better chemistry with O’Brien.

14) To the Death Rating ** After Jem'Hadar renegades attack DS9. Sisko must team up with Weyong and his Jem'Hadar squadron to stop them. Surprisingly dull episode. Little plot movement or drama. It’s a missed opportunity. The story contrasts our free-wheeling crew with the Jem’Hadar soldiers. The problem is the JH are quite one-dimensional. They don’t eat or sleep and do nothing but fight. And there’s something off about the DS9 cast. Maybe everyone was tired.

15) The Quickening Rating **Doctor Bashir is pulled into the plight of a society with a disease that was designed by the Dominion—a disease without a cure which everyone is born with and everyone dies with. Sluggish, pretentious Soap Opera Thinly veiled push for assisted suicide.

16) Body Parts Rating ** When Quark mistakenly thinks he’s going to die, he sells his remains to pay off his debts. Unfortunately, the buyer demands Quark deliver his body parts or do the unthinkable - break his Ferengi contract. Better than usual Quark episode, but a one joke comedy spun out far too long. Quark is the best of the Ferengi but he can’t carry a whole episode

Deep Space Nine - Season Four Reviews

  1. Broken Link  Rating ****1/2  Odo's molecular structure begins to disintegrate, and the only people who may be able to help save him are the Founders. One of the best “Odo Episodes”.
  2. Indiscretion Rating ***1/2 Kira teams up with Gul Dukat to explore a Cardassian ship lost 8 years ago. Another good Kira-Dukat episode. This is Dukat’s highpoint in DS9. He’s treated here as a fairly ruthless character, but also heroic and full of love for his daughter. Light years from the Genocidal, crazy, monster he later becomes.
  3. Return to Grace  Rating *** When Freighter captain Gul Dukat transports Kira to a diplomatic event, the two must work together to bring Klingon terrorists to justice. Another good Kira-Dukat episodes.
  4. The Sword of Kahless Rating *** Worf, Dax, and Kor’s quest for a long-lost legendary icon, results in them fighting renegades and each other. Excellent adventure story –All three actors have good chemistry with each other.
  5. The Way of the Warrior Rating *** When the Klingons bring a task force to DS9, Lt. Cmdr. Worf arrives to uncover their mysterious intentions. Solid episode introducing Worf to the DS9 crew.  Dukat shows up too. Some easily skipped Sikso-Family scenes.
  6. Starship Down  Rating **1/2 The Defiant is attacked and severely damaged by Jem'Hadar fighters and must escape the Jem'Hadar and a violent space storm. Uneven episode combining a boring “Ship in trouble” main plot, with a good Quark comic subplot. The oddest scene, so typical of a liberal show, is Kira uttering a Bajorian Prayer over an injured Sisko – the supposed Emissary, and when Sisko recovers he doesn’t bond with Kira over Bajorian Religion. Instead, he asks Kira to a Baseball Game!
  7.  Accession Rating **1/2 A man emerges from the wormhole after three centuries and claims to be the Emissary. and announces he will bring back an ancient caste system.  Interesting story about Bajorian religion. That Sisko ends up being the Prophet’s choice as “Emissary” is rather silly but whatever. BTW, it’s significant that the Federation - supposedly in love with diversity, the “prime directive”  and respecting other cultures - threatens Bajor with expulsion if they re-institute the Bajorian “Caste System” based on their old-time religion. Y’see the Federation believes in all kinds of societies cultures and beliefs, as long as they believe in CORRECT beliefs and cultures. Wonder what other “Federation rules” smaller planets have to follow. Note: we get a lot of O’brien-Kekio lighthearted family stuff – but it seems more tolerable than normal.
  8. Crossfire  Rating **1/2 Kira and Shakaar rekindle their romance when he visits DS9 for a conference, leading Odo to face his own buried feelings for Kira. Uneven Odo story that a setup for future Kira-Odo pairings. While I love Odo, we spend too much time on his unrequited love for Kira. And Shakaar is boring. This definitely needed a better Subplot. Still, it has some great Quark-Odo moments. Note: I hope this is the last of Kira and that damn mannish Red pantsuit!
  9. Hippocratic Oath  Rating **1/2 A Jem'Hadar squadron captures O'Brien and Bashir's and demands Bashir free them from their addiction.  Well done episode that raises some issues regarding ethical behaviors and the Jem”hadar. The subplot with Worf and Oda was fun.
